The Octave of the Assumption

August 15th marks the beginning of the traditional Assumption Octave, the final day of which (August 22nd) is our parish feast day. There will be one additional Mass tomorrow, in addition to the usual 6:30 am and 8 am Masses. The Solemnity of the Assumption is usually a holy day of obligation, except* when it falls on a Saturday or Monday, as is the case this year. (Please note that there will NOT be a 7 pm Mass on the 15th.)

In addition to Sunday, the holy days of obligation in the United States are:
January 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter, the solemnity of the Ascension
August 15, the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
November 1, the solemnity of All Saints
December 8, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
December 25, the solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ

*Whenever January 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, or August 15, the solemnity of the Assumption, or November 1, the solemnity of All Saints, falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the “precept to attend Mass is abrogated”.
