Ways to Get Involved
As always, HSA has many activities that we coordinate throughout the year and we could not do them without the invaluable help of parents. There is always a need for extra help, in big and small ways, if you work at home or have a full-time job. Please take a look at the following list and see where you might be able to share your talents. We will have tables for each committee set up at the Volunteer Rally at the start of school so that you can sign up or get more info. Please look over these and consider how you might be able to help. Additional requests for volunteers will be made as we get closer to the dates, so if you need a little time to think about it, we will be contacting everyone throughout the year.
Year-Round Volunteer Opportunities:
Homeroom Parents – homeroom parents work with HSA to share information with their classroom parents. In addition, they communicate to classroom parents and/or HSA any needs the teacher may have for supplies or volunteers. Duties of the homeroom parent will include organizing volunteers for parties and events for the teacher, coordinating donations for the Fall Festival or Gala baskets, asking for drivers/chaperones for field trips, and arranging volunteers for classroom support as needed by the teacher. One parent is needed for each classroom.
Cafeteria duty – Once a month, assist with serving food in the cafeteria 10:00-12:30
Morning car line – at least one parent to open doors each morning 7-8:00a.m.
Teacher snacks – provide an assortment of snack of Monday on designated week (will be split among several parents)
Monthly birthdays – provide treats once a month for teacher birthdays on first or last Fridays of month (will be split among several parents)
Box Tops for Education – this is an ongoing fundraiser throughout the school year – Chair will promote the collection of box tops through fun challenges suggested by organization and will work with principal/assistant principal to set up out-of-uniform reward days.
Date-Specific Volunteer Opportunities
Pancake Breakfast – TBD – Chair will work with 8th grade to set up the event, coordinate with the 8th grade classroom (8th graders serve and bus tables at the restaurant), promote the event in the school, area parishes, and possibly the paper. Ticket sales booths will be needed after masses at church prior to the event.
Fun Run – Sept-Oct. – Will need parent volunteers to help run this program.
Fall Festival – Oct.-Nov. – the school orders t-shirts, activity wrist bands and refillable cups for sale in advance of the festival – these are promoted through the school – the chair will handle ordering, school sales, and setting up parish sales booths after masses on the two weeks before the festival.
Book Fair – November – Help set up and take down book fair; work shifts during the school days and during weekend masses
Advent Mass – December – prelude music in church at 5pm, Mass at 5:30pm, student concert in gym at 6:30pm. Chair will coordinate cookies and drinks served after concert. May need to put up decorations for tables and a backdrop for concert.
Catholic Schools Week – January – February – Help will be needed to coordinate each of the daily events of CSW. Events include bowling, dress up days, door decorations, skating, teacher lunch, student appreciation day, pastor/staff lunch.
Gala of Lights – April – Chair(s) will work with Development Director to plan this event. Activities for which volunteers are needed include promotions, decorations, food, music, setup/cleanup chair, etc. In addition to sales of tickets to school families, this should be promoted to alumni and sales tables will be set up after masses prior to the event.
Grandparents Day/Spring Musical – April – The school will plan the costumes, stage decorations, and music. HSA provides a breakfast for grandparents before the morning performance. Plus HSA provides snacks in each classroom for the kids after mass.
Sports Award Night/Dessert Reception – May – provided for students who have competed on SMS sports teams and their families (because of cross country, the age is now 3rd grade and up). Gym is decorated in school colors with sports related centerpieces on the tables. Students often sit by grade level. Parents sit at additional tables. The school purchases the 8th grade student gifts and the awards given for each sport – and a gift for the coaches. Historically the school has asked Cathy Lowden to bake a large sports themed cake for this and then other desserts have been provided. 6th grade will be responsible for serving and coordinating the food. Mrs. Miller will assist with the planning.
Field Day – May – The school coordinates the games and activities for the day, but parent volunteers are needed to help run each station. Lunch is hot dogs or hamburgers, served outside the cafeteria, by parent volunteers. We usually have a snow-cone machine set up for after lunch, run by volunteers. Students sign yearbooks in the gym at the end of the day. Volunteers will be needed to help take down the stations at the end of the day.
